I completed an entire year of nutritionist school and not once did they encourage us to create meal plans for our clients or tell them exactly what to do. Never did they tell us how often to tell people to eat either. That’s the beauty of it – everyone’s nutrition is their own. They drilled in to us the importance of teaching our clients how to find their own balance while understanding the principles behind it. Because of that approach, they drove home new, evidenced based functional nutrition concepts that I like to promote. However, they don’t always work for everyone…and turn in to quite the debates some times
Matthew’s Input
One example is the rugged mountain man I call my husband. He wants my audience to know that no matter how much effort you put in to eating “like Jac”, some people just don’t have it built in to them to have portion control. (Note: I do not eat perfectly, but since making as many changes as I have, I don’t have many cravings. It’s a little weird).
BUT! You can practice something like carb control, or sugar control. This is as simple as taking note of the amount of carbs or sugar that you have in a day and finding alternates with purpose.
Exhibit A: Rugged Mountain Man loves meat. Like, a lot. His soul twin is Ron Swanson.
The cool part is, he still practices portion control in his own way. He would kill to have a bun on his homemade meat mountain he recently concocted (inspired by the one and only Arby’s meat mountain), but he’s killing it at reducing his joint inflammation from the 8 slipped discs in his back he suffers with.
I recently posted on Instagram at @prescribingnourishment about his healthy take on the meat mountain, and in my eyes it absolutely that. Healthy. This is because the term healthy is relative. Some people might be reactive to gluten, corn syrup, and other additives more so than they would be to a “fatty” meal. Mountain Man’s sandwich doesn’t contain any breading or deep drying like the Arby’s version. It doesn’t contain deli meats that are high in nitrate. It doesn’t contain sauces saturated with corn syrup and sugar.
He did awesome!
